I quench knives and swords in it. The large sizes offer especially good values. One steel one quenchant and a log book and a good testing program again with notes will put you farther along in less time than bouncing around with different steels and different quenchants. I'm thinking something that I could put a lid on would be nice to keep contaminents out of it. Yes, I think 6 inch diameter is more than enough, especially for oil quenching.
If I quench a large knife or more than one small one wehn I recheck the oil temp it has gotten too warm to do another.

Mine is an 8" dia SS tube welde to a 10"square baseplate. The lid is a great feature that can help smother out flare ups and the 10"x10"x3/8" base makes for a nice sturdy platform. air/water tight seal on the lid, which can easily be replaced in case of fire. You also need to have symetrical flow if you choose to agitate your tank. This works for me. Some folks use really large quench tanks that are not as easy to heat up when in use.
